electric crematotium - our charity work to society at erode








my friend ,dr saghadevan wanted to a electric crematorium at erode and reached us for our free architectural consultancy ... we, at murali architects ,took it up as a very serious effort

we felt that the dead requires a better treatment than the ones that is been offered at present electric crematoriums


we created series of great pyramids and mandapams on the banks of the river cauvery which will create the desired moods to

gather,cry,mourn,pray,pay respects,do the last rites and part with heart filled with the wonderful thoughts of the departed

with no funds and no site, the project got started , but ,we as team with the leadership of dr saghadevan ,produced a very ambitious grand scheme in the 10 acre land,the schemes were shown to people of erode for donations

people belived in the cause and every one contributed ,rs 3 crores was collected and we have a monument for the dead at erode where the poor can have decent departure with out paying, free cremations for the poor,ambulance for free pick up ,freezers for the safe keeping till the relatives arrive from distant land


all that is possible because of the goodness of the people at erode with a selfless person like dr saghadevan ,who brought them together

we had a very satisfying relationship and contribution

the inauguration is on 29 th june at erode

c o n c e p t :

we want to create a special place for the highly stressed up i.t. professionals , for the guest who enters our premises.. we do not want it to be like any other hotel or a guest house, continuously reminding that they r away from home...... we feel when some one travels from airport to our place , he or she should feel a totally different ambience.it should be like a oasis....be like entering a natural resort or rain forest ..... a quiet setting...where the person , the nature and a very silent architecture alone should exist the aspects attached to the materialistic world like money, fame , fancy elements all that should fade and vanish people need to get down from the car at the entry itself[ the luggages will be taken care by the staff}..... and walk towards the entry to our guest house thro the , gently raised natural mound which is covered with touch of vegetation , but, the whole plaza will be covered with a large sheet of tranquil, meditative quality of water, filled with golden lilies and green shiny leaves,


pl see it in the slide show format pl refer the water temple in japan by the renowned japanese architect tadao ando in japan this water body shall have the visual continuity with our swimming pools,like in the works of the great sri lankan architect , geoffery bawa ,in all his beautiful hotels where he ties the swimming pools with surrounding sea by visual continuity when the reach the entry to our guest house thro this walk thro water bodt ,they will be surprised by a cascade , a sheet of water receiving them, they view ,cherish, then enter into our bldg, pl see the link below


http://picasaweb.google.com/Simonpix3/SriLankaPrints/photo#5059337142173308866 once they enter our lobby, they will see a grand double height,cathedral ceiling,which will give them an idea abt what this bldg is all abt . then the stair court , with white colored pebbles, yellow bamboos, stone wall which will go all the way up to the ,entire height of the stair and lift tower.t we want the lobby to be a quiet place with a good view of the pool and the front sheet water and cascade,stair landscaped court with special sky lightthe whole shall as natural as possible, but with the huge cantilevering beams which will support the flying, floating bed rooms and balconies... these bed rooms balconies will look towards the seabut, they do not look at each other , looking away from each other to create privacy each balcony user will feel that he or she is alone and enjoying calm sea some of the balconies float above the swimming pool water

A ready reckoner on building cost
An overview of consumption of materials and unit rates is needed. One quick way to assess the cost is to use the square meter or square feet rates, writes S.Krishnamurthy

There have been regular reports about the rise in material and labour costs. As clients and users we are left wondering how much is the rise and how it affects our budget. Any little information and thumb rule to understand the situation would be of much help. An overview of material consumptions, unit rates would help us navigate through the maze of construction estimates. Here is an attempt to help you follow the process of cost estimates. A quick way to know how much it costs is to use the square meter or square feet rates. In order to arrive at this, a broad understanding of how much material is required to construct a square meter is necessary. Table 1 roughly indicates the material consumption. Based on this one can work out the cost of construction. Table 2 explains how the building cost is calculated.
Services include water supply, sanitary, and electrical works with minimum normal grade fittings. This rate can be considered for estimation. It may vary with the location, type of soil met with in foundation, period / season of execution, changes in terms of finishing materials and so on.
For example, ceramic tile flooring would be at Rs.565/sq.m. Instead if you replace it with marble it would cost about Rs.1200 per sq.m.
The above-mentioned broad rates are only for load bearing structure that is constructed without columns. For a framed structure with GF +2 floors, that is construction with columns, it may cost 25 to 30% per cent more than a load bearing type of construction. It will also vary with the number of floors and provision of lift etc. For example, an apartment with ground and two floors may cost Rs.10500/ sq.m. on an average. The unit rates mentioned here will not be applicable to porch, covered / open sit-outs in upper floors etc.

Now having obtained the unit rates, one can calculate how much the entire building will cost. Once you arrive at the overall figure, you can subdivide it in terms of components of construction or stages of construction. This will help you manage your cash flow better, control your budget and finishing the building within estimate. The Table 4 and 5 explains the cost in terms of percentage of components of construction. The above-mentioned rates and steps are to be used as a rough guide. The exact estimates can be worked out only after you finalise your specification in consultation with your architect or engineer.Escalation clause
The rise in material cost during execution affects the unit rate and our estimate. For example, if we had worked out cement cost at Rs 250 per bag and during construction time it rises to Rs.270 this would amount to an increase of about Rs 84 per sq.m.
Normally a clause to cover price escalation is introduced in the construction agreement with the contractor. In case you are buying an apartment look for this clause and be satisfied with the terms. If it is not there discuss it with your developer.

A firm agreement about the modalities of intimation and settlement of cost difference must be arrived at upfront. This may avoid any hardships during the completion and handing over of the building.
